The best exercise tips on losing weight are those that take care of the pennies...

I think I've tried most of the exercise tips on losing weight that are about, at one time or another. Very few of them have been constants in my life. And that's o.k

You actually don't have to commit to one type of exercise, or one sport, or one of anything. You just have to move more.

So, it doesn't matter if you go to the gym for 3 weeks and then find that something comes up (a need to bum around in your pajamas for a day, maybe) and you don't get there. It matters that you do something else instead. So, you might play tennis every week for a month, and then one of team mates gets sick and it's cancelled. It doesn't mean you stop moving, just grab another one of the exercise tips on losing weight, and run (mind the pun...I hate running) with it for as long as it lasts.

Just because you can't make it to something on a regular basis, doesn't mean you've failed, or that you should give up on exercise. Exercise is an integral part of losing weight, and building muscle tone, so that you're body is in shape and you look great.

We have been programmed to believe we have to stick to something for a long time, otherwise we shouldn't bother.

We do...we have to stick to moving, but it doesn't have to be one type of exercise, it doesn't even have to be for months. We succeed when we realise that, for whatever reason, we won't be getting to the gym, or on the treadmill today, so we'll just do something else instead.

Exercise tips on losing weight...What can you do?

Write a list of all the things you might be able to do on any given day. For example, half an hour at the gym, walk the kids to school, 15 minutes of weights in the lounge room in your pyjamas, 25 lifts of the full washing basket, walk to the shop for milk, speed clean, walk during lunch break, 50 sit-ups while watching television at night. The more the better.

Add to this the things you'd "like" to try. A sport you enjoyed as a child, an activity you liked when you were younger, a class that's interested you which you'd like to give a go.

Then depending on what your day is like, refer to your list and pick one or two that will fit in. They don't have to be the same every day, just look for two that you can manage, each day. Eventually you won't need your list, you'll automatically take the opportunity to move as much as possible.

Exercise tips on losing weight...The possibilities

The possibilities are endless. Really, they are! Just think, it's not only about the ways we can put more exercise into our day...it's also about how much energy we use with what we're already doing.

We can do things faster, with more strength, we can flex and relax our muscles more every time we pick something up or put it down.

We can do things with friends, instead of lunch at home, lunch at a park, or a botanical gardens, we can stroll and look, play games with the children. We can move more!

There are clubs for just about everything these days. Always wanted to surf, you don't have to commit to doing it everyday of your life. Just organise 3 or 4 lessons. That will work those muscle groups. Love to row, join a rowing club.

And one other thing, if you're self conscious about your weight and doing things with others, concentrate on what you can do by yourself. The bigger you are, the more little changes will have an effect on your weight loss. That's because it takes more energy to move you around, so when you move, you actually burn more than when a little person moves. You'll notice major changes with small things.

Focus on moving more in any way you can. Walk around the house twice before you go to the kitchen. Use the toilet furthest from the couch, instead of the closest. Walk there fast. Add all these to your list of exercise tips on losing weight, the ones that you might fit in on any day.

These are all the little things that make a long term difference, it's these little things that gradually become constant in your life. It's knowing that it's o.k if you're one of those people that can't maintain a single type of exercise longer than a couple of months (I can't, at least not on a regular weekly basis...too much life), but you can keep and put more moving and activity in your life.

If you get bored, just do something else. It's o.k. to get bored with something, it's o.k. to change and do something else. It's just not o.k. to do nothing!

Exercise tips on losing weight...take care of the little bits

Have you heard that old saying: "If you take care of the pennies the pounds will take care of themselves". What about "If you take care of the minutes, the hours will take care of themselves". That's the best exercise tips on losing weight there are, if you take care of moving in the minutes, the rest will take care of itself. (Pretty much anyway).

The same applies to exercise, if you take care of the little bits; moving as often as possible, taking advantage of opportunities and your own interests as they come (and go...like bike riding for me...it was good for 6 months), doing things with as much energy as possible; the weight loss will come.

You'll find yourself not having to think about how much exercise you're doing, because you'll already be doing it. You'll find that you're more likely to actually enjoy the sports, routines and classes you take on, because you're not applying pressure to yourself to commit to them forever.

Failure is not when you sign up for the gym and then drop off after a couple of months (or weeks in my case); success is in just doing something else, and in getting and staying physically active.

If you take care of the moments to do as much physical activity as you can...then the fitness and the weight loss will come too.
