15 fat burning foods...are they really worth eating?

A little while ago a headline jumped out at me; "15 Fat Burning Foods". So if you're looking to find out how to burn body fat this sounds great, there's been more and more articles around telling us that certain foods can help us in our quest for losing weight, are we reading it right though, is this actually workable?

15 fat burning foods...what and why

The list of fat burning foods is quite long, in fact, I've seen a list that says there are over a hundred fat burning foods.

The theory is that there are foods that require more energy to break down into useable fuel for your body, and that in the process these foods can also increase your metabolism, (the inner workings of your body and digestion system) so that you burn more energy, or fat.

This is supported by some scientific research, so far so good.

Before we go on, here is a list of the 15 fat burning foods I've found most commonly listed in articles on this subject:

  • Green tea
  • Spicy foods - chilli, jalapeno and cayenne peppers specifically
  • Eggs
  • Beans
  • Olive oil
  • Low fat dairy products
  • Garlic
  • Wholegrains
  • Berries
  • Bananas
  • Citrus fruits
  • Honey
  • Nuts
  • Fish - specifically salmon and sardines

Now many of these articles suggest that eating these foods is a way how to burn body fat, many of these articles also suggest that these foods should be part of a calorie controlled eating plan, oh and don't forget to exercise everybody.

Well they're right...as part of a calorie controlled, which means regulating how much energy you put in, diet, and with exercise these foods are great...as are many others.

The other side is that all the foods above will have you put on weight if you overeat them...period! No ifs, buts and maybes! Maybe with the exception of chillies and berries and citrus fruits, why? Because these have lots of fibre, very few calories and a lot of water, but a diet of this alone would be difficult to maintain, and you'll have to eat an awful lot of them to fill you up.

Most of the foods listed above are in my weekly diet, and I can tell you right now that they do help me feel satisfied, they are all yummy, they are great for my energy levels and health, but that does not mean I can eat as much of them as I want and lose weight.

Nope, not going to happen!

Firstly, these foods may require your body to work harder and use more energy, but they don't make you use 10 or even 5 times the energy for any length of time.

A chilli and a bowl of oatmeal won't have your metabolism so high that you'll drop a kilo in a day.

Secondly, if you eat as many bananas as you want, say 3 a day, and a huge bowl of oatmeal, and 3 tubs of low fat dairy, apart from the fact that there's no vegetables in there, you'll only lose weight if the total of these, in terms of energy, is still less than you use.

There is however some very good reasons to eat these 15 fat burning foods, in fact, even the article that suggested that there were 100 fat burning foods has merit...

How to burn body fat with these foods

What all of these foods have in common, and those of the 100 list, is that none of them are processed...notice, all are as nature pretty much intended them.

These foods should all be part of a healthy eating plan, and they will help you lose weight when you eat them in moderation, and especially if you're replacing high processed foods that you have been eating, with foods off this list.

Your body does work better on these kinds of food. You will feel better, and you will look better, and because your body does work harder to digest and extract nutrients from unprocessed foods, they will give you a boost and add to the other actions you're taking to lose weight and maintain it.

If you're expecting them to be a cure all, and to lose 30 pounds overnight, think again.

Olive oil is still a fat containing 9 calories per gram. Fish oil is good for you and you should have some, but eat 3 kilos of fish a week and that's a lot of fat. A handful of nuts everyday will do wonders for your skin, and give you heaps of nutrients, a 500gram bag a day is going to wind up on your hips.

These foods are all great for your body and healthy choices, moderation is the key though, to lose weight you still have to eat less energy than you use.

Losing weight, feeling good, looking well are all tied up together, and the 15 fat burning foods in the above list will all help you in achieving that, they're not however a weight loss miracle.

Keep focusing on making each choice as healthy as you can, and incorporate into your diet any of these foods that you like, or which you'd like to try, remember moderation in everything, and you will lose the weight, and you will keep it off.
